The 15th Conference of China Comparative Education Society and International Conference on Professor Wang Chengxu’s Educational Thought, co-sponsored by China Comparative Education Society (CCES), Zhejiang University, Chinese National Commission for UNESCO and UNESCO Beijing Office, and organized by the College of Education, Zhejiang University, was held in Zhijiang Hotel Hangzhou, Oct. 9-10, 2010. Over 600 international participants from the UK, the USA, Japan, the Czech Republic and Ghana, as well as domestic participants from about 140 higher education institutions attended the conference.
The conference began with the Celebration of Professor Wang Chengxu’s 100th Birthday. At the Opening Ceremony of the conference, Professor Wang Yingjie, Chairman of the Panel of Education, Academic Degree Commission of the State Council (ADCSC) and President of China Comparative Education Society reviewed the development of comparative education in China during the past three decades and analyzed the current situation and trends for the future in his opening remarks. On behalf of Zhejiang University, Professor Luo Weidong, the Vice President, gave congratulatory remarks, and stated the important significance of theconference in promoting the development of the program of comparative education, the humanities, and the social sciences as well in Zhejiang University. Professor Xu Xiaozhou, Dean of the College of Education, Zhejiang University delivered the remarks to warmly welcome all participants and gave a brief introduction of the glorious history of comparative education in Zhejiang University. Professor Gu Mingyuan, president of The China Society of Education also delivered a speech, expressing his pleasure for the prosperous development of comparative education studies in China.
Experts and scholars who participated in the conference engaged in positive and fruitful discussion and communication on the theme of ‘International Perspectives on Balanced-development of Education’. At the plenary session of the conference, seven invited scholars, Professor Feng Zengjun, Vice President of China Comparative Education Society, Director of Center for Studies of Education Modernization, Sun Yat-Sen University, Professor Robert Cowen, Institute of Education, University of London, UK, Former President of Comparative Education Society in Europe (CESE), Professor Xu Xiaozhou, Dean of the College of Education, Zhejiang University; Holder of the UNESCO Chair in Entrepreneurship Education, Professor Keith Lewin, Director of the Centre for International Education, Department of Education, School of Education and Social Work, Sussex University, UK, Professor Robert Arnove, School of Education, Indiana University, Bloomington, USA, Professor Huang Zhicheng, Vice President of The China Comparative Education Society, Institute of International and Comparative Education, East China Normal University, Professor Mark Bray, Director of The Comparative Education Research Centre, the University of Hong Kong, presented the following keynote speeches respectively: ‘The Historical Mission of China Comparative Education under National Medium and Long Term Planning’, ‘Comparative Education: Its Pasts and Its Possibilities’, ‘The Strategic Choice of Entrepreneurship Education in Higher Education Institutions: American Model and EU Model’, ‘Balanced-development of Basic Education: is Universal Access Achievable? ’, ‘Achieving Balance among Competing Challenges in Chinese Higher Education’, ‘The Balanced Development of Basic Education and the Right of Education: Perspective of Inclusive Education’, and ‘A Comparative Perspective on Comparative Education’.
At the parallel sessions of the conference, over 50 scholars including Professor Ma Jiansheng, Beijing Normal University, Professor Jiang Hua, Harbin Institute of Technology, Professor Ding Bangping, Capital Normal University, Associate Professor Yang Rui, The University of Hong Kong, Professor Heidi Ross, Indiana University and Professor Poole Gregory, Doshisha University, presented their latest research outcomes respectively on the five sub-themes of ‘Balanced-development of Basic Education’, ‘Balanced-development of Higher Education’, ‘Cultivation of Innovative Talents and Education Reform’, ‘Capacity-building for Comparative Education’ and ‘Professor Wang Chengxu’s Educational Thoughts’.
At the Closing Ceremony, Professor Ke Sen, South China Normal University, Professor Shi Xiaoguang, Peking University, Professor Liu Baocun, Beijing Normal University, Professor Xiang Xianming, Beijing Normal University and Professor Wang Libing, Zhejiang University, presented summary reports on the five parallel sessions. Professor Wang Yingjie presented a summary of the conference and highly praised the major breakthroughs on the number of participants and the quality of papers and presentations. Professor Xu Maijin, Deputy Dean of the College of Education, Zhejiang University delivered the closing address, stating the fourfold significance of hosting this conference.
This conference is the largest and highest level CCES conference ever held since 1978. The success of conference embodied the great outcomes in the field of teaching and research and the innovative and progressive sprits of faculty members and students of the College of Education, Zhejiang University.
