Delegation from ZJU’s College of Education Visits The Chinese University of Hong Kong for Academic Exchange

On July 29th 2018, a delegation from College of EducationZhejiang Universityset off to The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) for one week’s academic and cultural exchange and learning. This activity was jointly organized by ZJU’s College of Education and CUHK. The delegation consisted of 19 undergraduate students and 2 faculty members.

OPENING CEREMONY

On the morning of July 30, the opening ceremony was held in CUHK. Professor Pang S. K. Nicholas from the Hong Kong Centre for the Development of Educational Leadership, gave warm welcome to the delegation and introduced the culture and spirit of Hong Kong in a vivid way. Associate Prof. ZHANG Jia, the deputy head of Institute of Educational Leadership and Policy of ZJU’s College of Education expressed her gratitude for the support of this exchange activity. Two CUHK doctoral students shared their experience of mainland students studying in Hong Kong.

The exchange camp mainly focuses on Hong Kong's culture and art, economic development, environmental protection and educational policy. Through lectures, tours and visits, and communication with CUHK undergraduates, the students expanded their international horizons, developed academic ideas, and improved problem-solving and communication skills.

TOPIC 1: CULTURE AND ART

Assistant Professor WU Ziyu from the Open University of Hong Kong gave a lecture with rich film clips. He introduced the 100-year development of the Hong Kong film industry and appreciated the aesthetic value of different styles of films. On the afternoon of August 1, the delegation visited Hong Kong Museum of History to get a better understanding of Hong Kong's natural ecology, folk customs and historical development. Besides, the delegation visited The Central and Western Heritage Trail and the PMQ to learn about the cultural and creative industries.

TOPIC 2: ECONOMY AND DEVELOPMENT

The delegation went to the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong to learn about the legislative process and the rules of Hong Kong’s law system. On the morning of August 1, the delegation visited the Hong Kong Monetary Authority to learn about the main functions and duties of the HKMA, getting to know the development of Hong Kong currency and banks.

TOPIC 3: ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

On the afternoon of July 30, the delegation went to the Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works, the largest secondary sewage treatment works in Hong Kong to visit the primary sedimentation tank, aeration tank of the sewage treatment plant, and the water reclamation facilities, getting a better understanding the process of sewage treatment.

The environmentalist and freelancer PANG Yiming gave a lecture entitled “How to Develop Environmental Awareness in Schools”. Mr. Pang introduced the environmental behaviors and their influences from the four aspects of personal action, social system, industrial design and corporate values.

TOPIC 4: EDUCATIONAL POLICY

Dr. LU Bin, Director of the Quality School Improvement Project of Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research of CUHK, gave a speech to explain the reform process of Hong Kong's education, showed the changes in Hong Kong's education policies and plans, and explored its causes and influences to the local students, which aroused our interests on the similarities and differences between the education of mainland and HK.

On the afternoon of August 3, the delegation visited the Central Resource Centre of the Hong Kong Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Teachers' Centre. HE Jingan, a member of the Hong Kong Teachers' Centre Advisory Management Committee, explained the background, purpose, charter and structure of the establishment of the Center and introduced the efforts of the Center in exerting professionalism, collaboration and life-long Learning.

VISITING TOUR

Besides of the thematic learning, the delegation paid a variety of visits and excursions to Chong Chi College and New Asia College in the CUHK campus as well as the Tamar Park, the Victoria Peak and Hong Kong Central Library to have a more intuitive and profound understanding of Hong Kong.

SUMMARY REPORT AND CLOSING CEREMONY

The closing ceremony of the exchange camp was held on the morning of August 4th. In the group report sharing session, ZJU students shared the thoughts and feelings of learning and research on these four learning topics respectively. On behalf of The Hong Kong Centre for the Development of Educational Leadership, Professor Pang S. K. Nicholas, issued the certificates for all students, and provided valuable suggestions for study in the future. Associate Professor ZHANG Jia made a summary of the seven-day exchange camp and hoped that there would be more opportunities to strengthen the cooperation between the two universities in the future.
